In order to learn about journalism and understand how journalists work, you need to watch and listen to what they produce every day. To that end, you should be watching, listening, reading news for a least a couple hours a day. When she took the Summer Institute how many years ago, Jeanelle Mandes was up at 5 every morning surfing and reading and watching and listening. And by the time we started at 10, she could tell you everything about any news event in the world. That’s why Jeanelle is awesome at her job and why she sailed through INCA and then rocked the School of Journalism. For sure 5 a.m. is a bit early, but you get the idea. My suggestions are Eagle Feather News (you’ll meet Jeanelle and John Lagimodiere in May), CBC radio 102.5 in Regina (listen for INCAs Penny Smoke and Brad Bellegarde) , 540 AM across the province, APTN National News (watch for Tamara Pimentel–you’ll meet her at the end of May) and APTN News Online, CTV News (watch for Creeson Agecoutay), Global TV (you won’t see Stewart Manhas because he’s behind the camera, but you’ll meet him in June), CJME, Leader-Post, Star Phoenix (look for Betty Ann Adam–you’ll meet her in the second week), Globe and Mail, Macleans, and whatever other news sites you like. And remember–channel Jeanelle!
